Pediatric Hospitalists

What is Pediatric Hospitalist?

A pediatric hospitalist is a pediatrician who only works in the inpatient setting in a hospital. The hospitalist takes care of sick children who need to be in the hospital in the same way an adult hospitalist cares for hospitalized adults. As medicine becomes more complicated and new advances and therapies are discovered, caring for hospitalized patients requires extra time and attention. This can be challenging for a busy office physician. Consequently, the use of hospitalists has grown dramatically as primary care physicians trust the care of their patients to their inpatient colleagues. This collaboration benefits the patients and the providers, and it works well throughout the world.

Inpatient pediatric units with pediatric hospitalists are expensive and usually out of reach for community hospitals. We are fortunate to be positioned in Lawrence, where only thirty minutes away is a comprehensive pediatric facility. Children’s Mercy South, in Overland Park, offers a full range of care to pediatric patients, including their newly opened ER (www.childrensmercy.org). Within an hour of our town are two other large tertiary care facilities, Childrens’s Mercy main hospital and the University of Kansas Medical Center (www.kumc.edu). All of these facilities provide comprehensive pediatric care for the children of Lawrence. We recommend our patients to these institutions should they need inpatient care.
